Dog Friendly Places to Visit

Silver Street, Wells. Connects with the moat walk around the Bishops Palace and adjacent to Palace Fields where there is ample space for dogs to play. Parking is often possible in Silver Street and it is only a short walk through the Park or along the Moat path to Wells Market Place and High Street.

Charterhouse. From Wells, take the B3135 at Green Ore and turn right on to the B3134. Follow this road past the Castle of Comfort to the turning on the left, signposted to Charterhouse.

Charterhouse is located at the heart of the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It is rugged limestone countryside that is sparsely populated and renowned for its wildlife, outdoor pursuits, geology and archaeology.

Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve. Nr Easton, Wells Somerset. Three trails are available. The 2km red route takes about an hour and includes a strenuous scramble up the gorge. Robust footwear is recommended. The 1km black route takes you along a woodland ramble lush with ferns, mosses and fungi. It talks about half an hour. The easy access blue route takes about 16 minutes and is ideal for wheelchairs and puschairs.

Glastonbury Abbey Glastonbury, Somerset 01458 832267 Dogs are welcomed provided they are kept on leads at all times. We request this as we have badgers, squirrels, ducks and geese on site. Two 'dog loos' can be found within the grounds and plastic bags can be obtained from the ticket office, if needed.

Beacon Hill Wood, Nr Shepton Mallet, Somerset. Steep climbs, stunning scenery… and secret agents all form part of the unusual mix that makes Beacon Hill Wood a fascinating place to visit and popular with locals. A prominent landscape feature, visible for miles, a clump of large old beech trees at the centre form a distinctive crown on the ridge. The wood is archaeologically important with features dating back to Neolithic, Bronze Age and Roman times.

Forde Abbey & Gardens Chard, Somerset 01460 220231 Well behaved dogs are welcome at Forde Abbey on a short lead and the gardens make a favourite walking spot for many of our visitors. Dogs are allowed to accompany their owners into the tearoom and there is always a bowl for thirsty dogs at the tearoom door. Unfortunately we cannot allow dogs into the house.

Hestercombe Gardens Cheddon Fitzpaine, Somerset 01823 413923 Dogs are welcome in all areas of the gardens as long as they are kept on a short lead. They are also welcome in the outside seating area in the Courtyard Cafe. We ask that, out of courtesty to other visitors and garden staff, visitors bringing dogs to the garden clear up after their dog, using their own bags, and use the bins provided around the garden to dispose of the waste

Weston Super Mare - Sand Beach .This beach, which allows dogs all year round, has been suggested by a site user who says " all beaches here are best used when the tide is in or you and your pooch may end up very muddy indeed". Another Weston Super Mare beach - Weston Beach - is open to dogs from October to March. As always, please remember to clean up after your dog!

Cheddar Caves & Gorge Dogs and their well behaved owners are welcome into all our attractions at Cheddar Caves & Gorge!

Westonbirt - The National Arboretum. Westonbirt, Gloucestershire 01666 880220 We don't just "allow" dogs at Westonbirt, we positively encourage them. Together with their well-behaved companions, they can explore, off the lead, the sights and smells of Silk Wood, (which covers two thirds of the Arboretum), and the whole of The Downs area. (At certain times of the year sheep and cattle may graze The Downs, so please keep dogs on a lead near livestock).

All Open Space National Trust Properties are dog friendly, and many of those have tea rooms/cafes where dogs are also welcome (although in some cases this may be outside!)

Why not check with local National Trust properties to see if they have catering facilities which welcome dog walkers? The link provided below will take you to the search results of "Dog Friendly" National Trust properties.

IF YOU FIND ANY NEW DOG FRIENDLY LOCATIONS, PLEASE LET US KNOW SO WE CAN ADD TO THIS LIST
